DURBAN - The uMhlathuze Municipality has offered amnesty to all traffic offenders to pay half their fine amounts dating back from 2018.

The 50 percent amnesty, which resumes on Wednesday until February 2022, is only applicable to the pink ticket offenders and speed camera fines between the period of 2018 – 2021.

uMhlathuze municipal manager Lulamile Mapholoba called upon all motorists to check their status with the traffic unit.

“We are calling on all motorists who are aware that they have traffic fines to come forward during this festive season and settle half of their fines. Those who may not be aware may also utilise our communication lines to check their status and make arrangements to pay during the prescribed three months,” Mapholoba said.

He added that Umhlathuze's traffic unit was working with the service provider contracted to manage speed transgressions to track down all offenders and to notify them of this opportunity. He said pink tickets were managed by the city’s traffic officers.

The city also called for all public transport associations to encourage owners and drivers to utilise this opportunity.

“We will be engaging all associations within the city on this amnesty to ensure that they take the offer. We enjoy a good relationship with all associations, including the provincial body Santaco. This will bring about some relief to motorists, especially those who have accumulated speed fines and other penalties,” said Mapholoba.

The amnesty excludes those offenders who have been issued with summons.
