DURBAN - Petty crime continues to be a thorn in the side of residents, who become victims of theft day or night.

In Phoenix, north of Durban, a man was arrested after he stole a gearbox from the Longcroft area on Tuesday. He was attempting to flee towards a scrap yard near Eastbury Drive.

Private security company KZN VIP was alerted to the incident by the victim, who flagged down a patrolling vehicle. Response units then noticed the man fleeing along Croftbury Drive.

The man dropped the gearbox in front of the response vehicle and tried to flee but, luckily, additional support was sent and he was apprehended by KZN VIP and taken to Phoenix police station.

In the eManzimtoti area, south of Durban, on Wednesday morning a resident reported that a man was breaking into a neighbour’s garage near a petrol station on Kingsway Road.

The crime was reported to the Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO), which is supported by members of the eManzimtoti community in the fight against crime.

A short while later, CCPO supervisor Logan and his crew, Siyabonga, caught the man in possession of a stolen high-pressure cleaner and clothing he was suspected of stealing from a clothes line.

On Wednesday, the Provincial Vehicle and Trio Task Team, ET Rapid Response, Alpha 911 Tactical, Blue Security, Netstar and the CCPO arrested two men and recovered a stolen motor vehicle.

Police and private security companies working together received an alert from Netstar of a vehicle stolen in Newlands West, Durban.

According to reports, the vehicle was travelling on the N2 southbound. The driver took the Joyner Road off-ramp, south of Durban, and proceeded towards the KwaMakhutha area.

The police and security companies pursued the vehicle. The driver took an unpaved road to try to evade arrest, but the police soon stopped the car and arrested the men. They were charged with theft of motor vehicle at the Newlands East SAPS.
