DURBAN - AN 18-YEAR-OLD will appear in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on charges of armed robbery.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said a carjacking incident occurred on Saturday in Welbedacht East, where an Uber driver was accosted by three unknown men.

The men assaulted the driver before fleeing with his vehicle.

Mbele said police officers were immediately notified by the victim and a search was conducted in the area.

“While searching and with the community assistance, the team proceeded to Moorton which is in close proximity to where the crime was committed. A man was arrested and the hijacked vehicle was recovered,” she said.

The suspect was taken to Chatsworth police station.

Police are still searching for the two other men involved in the carjacking.

Meanwhile, police have appealed to motorists to be vigilant at all times and adhere to the advice provided by police so they can take appropriate steps to avoid hot spot areas or take the necessary precautions.

Safety Hints

– Do not park in dark or isolated areas. Criminals are opportunists who will pounce on unsuspecting citizens.

– Conduct regular checks with companies that are monitoring your tracking devices. Keep your vehicle log books safe should details be required by the police.

– If you have placed your vehicle for sale on social media websites, ensure that you verify information for authenticity before the sale. Meet the buyer at public places, do not allow the buyer an opportunity to drive the vehicle.
