DURBAN - A 49-year-old widow of a taxi boss from Cato Ridge in KwaZulu-Natal is under police guard after she allegedly tried to commit suicide to evade jail.

The widow, who cannot be named because she has not yet appeared in court, was arrested for her son’s murder in April, allegedly to claim from insurance.

Sources close to the matter told the Daily News that the woman was arrested, and put into a cell at the Durban Central SAPS.

However, when the officers checked on her, she was apparently foaming at the mouth and had to be rushed to hospital for medical assistance.

“There are suspicions that she might have drank pills or something prior to the arrest, to kill herself,” a source said.

The widow was arrested along with a 29-year-old man.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said a case of murder was being investigated by Inchanga SAPS.

“It is alleged that on April 13, 2021, a 20-year-old man was found inside a house in the Esikhelekehleni area in Inchanga with gunshot wounds to the head and body. He was declared dead at the scene,” Gwala said.

She added that after an intensive investigation by the investigating officer, two suspects, aged 29 and 49, were placed under arrest for the murder.

She said the suspects were arrested at the weekend and that the 29-year-old was expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court, while the widow remained under police guard in hospital.
