DURBAN - Two people were shot and killed during a rehearsal for a traditional Zulu dance (ingoma) in a rondavel in the Dumaneni area in Ulundi, northern KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday night at 9pm.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the two people were killed when shots were fired through the windows.

Gwala said that during the shooting, two people aged 38 and 39 were killed while six people, who were injured, were taken to hospital.

“Charges of murder and attempted murder were opened at Ulundi SAPS for investigation,” Gwala said.

“Ulundi detectives immediately commenced with their investigation and a 27-year-old man was placed under arrest. He will appear in the Mahlabathini Magistrate’s Court (this) week.”

Meanwhile, last Wednesday, the Hlanganani Regional Court, west of Pietermaritzburg, sentenced Bonga Khambule, 28, and Fana Ngcobo, 21, to life imprisonment for murder and 15 years for robbery while Khethukuthula Mthalane, 22, and Thobani Nkabini, 21, were each sentenced to 20 years for murder and 15 years for robbery. Their sentences will run concurrently.

Gwala said that on October 8, 2017, at about 10pm, Zwelethu Nzimande, 45, attended a traditional ceremony in the Solokohlo in Bulwer, when he argued with the four men. After the ceremony, Nzimande went to his homestead in the Emakhuzeni area, and while he was there with his family, the men arrived.

“They attacked and assaulted him as well as his family members. Nzimande was also stabbed and shot and he died at a local clinic. His family members were injured in the altercation,” Gwala said.

“The suspects stole an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene on foot. Charges of murder and robbery were opened for investigation at Bulwer SAPS.”

Gwala said the men were traced and arrested in April 2018.

She said they were tried in court and remained behind bars throughout the trial.
