DURBAN - Joao Manuel de Oliveira Rendeiro is expected to make his second appearance at the Verulam Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for a bail application.

De Oliveira Rendeiro was arrested by Interpol’s National Crime Bureau in Pretoria in uMhlanga Rocks, north of Durban, on Saturday morning.

He is a convicted fraudster who is wanted by the Portuguese government.

De Oliveira Rendeiro had appeared briefly in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

It was believed his first appearance would be part of his extradition process.

SABC News reported that National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Kara said the magistrate decided to adjourn the bail application for Tuesday, adding that this arrest happened after a person in question was placed on a red list.

De Oliveira Rendeiro was a Portuguese national who had absconded from Portugal after being convicted on a multimillion-dollar fraud case and sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment before he escaped.

During a bilateral meeting at the 89th Interpol General Assembly in Istanbul, Turkey, the head of Portugal’s Judicial Police, Luis Neves, brought the matter to the attention of the National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Khehla John Sitole, on November 24, 2021.

Sitole committed to tracking and tracing the fugitive after it emerged that he could be hiding in South Africa.

Members from the Interpol NCB in Pretoria, acting on an Interpol Red Notice, traced the fugitive to a location in uMhlanga Rocks, where he was arrested at 7am on Saturday morning.
