DURBAN – Police have arrested six suspects aged between 25 and 30 for allegedly robbing two liquor stores in KwaZulu-Natal.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said police received a complaint of a burglary at a liquor store in Highflats, south of Durban, on Monday at 6.25pm.

“The suspects fled the scene in their getaway vehicle when they spotted the police vehicle approaching. A bolt cutter was used to gain access into the shop and alcohol, cigarettes, as well as cash, were among other items were stolen,” Mbele said.

She said a case of burglary was opened at the Highflats police station.

Mbele said in the early hours of Wednesday morning, Highflats police, Pietermaritzburg K9 unit and private security companies received information on the whereabouts of the suspects. The team went to the Thornville area in Pietermaritzburg where they spotted the two vehicles.

“Police requested to conduct a search which resulted in police officers recovering the stolen alcohol. The vehicles that the suspects were driving were seized and sent to the pound for further investigations.

“Investigations revealed that the arrested suspects are also found to be linked to a business burglary in Nottingham Road where a liquor store was broken into and alcohol and other items were stolen,” Mbele said.

She said the suspects were arrested and would appear in the Highflats Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for two counts of burglary.
