DURBAN - Police arrested six men for the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition in two separate incidents in Durban.
Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said on Friday afternoon that Hilton police and security companies were performing their duties along the Hilton/Howick Road when they came across a suspicious vehicle. The vehicle came up as stolen in Newlands East, north of Durban.
“Upon attempting to stop the vehicle, the driver sped off resulting in a high-speed chase. Three suspects aged between 28 and 32 were eventually arrested. One unlicensed firearm, ammunition and suspected stolen property were recovered from the suspects’ possession,” Mbele said.
She said the suspects were taken to the Hilton police station for further processing.
“All three suspects were charged for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as also for possession of property suspected to be stolen. The vehicle has been impounded for further investigation,” she said.
Mbele said the men were expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Umbilo task team arrested three suspects for the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
Mbele said it was alleged that while police were conducting duties along Umbilo Road on Thursday evening, they came across a vehicle with three men, which was intercepted and searched.
“During the search, police discovered two 9mm pistols and 36 rounds of ammunition which was seized on the scene. The suspect’s vehicle was also identified to be fitted with false registration plates and was taken to the pound for further investigation,” Mbele said.
She added that the men, aged between 19 and 27, are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon for the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
