Police arrest eight suspected business robbers and charge them with unlawful firearm, ammo, stolen property possession and dealing in dagga

DURBAN - A 10-hour multidisciplinary intelligence-driven operation in Pongola, northern KwaZulu-Natal resulted in the arrest of eight robbers.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said police conducted the operation to curb crime in the Pongola area.

Mbele said police received a report of a business robbery taking place at a shop in the Godlwayo area and went there. Police then received information which led them to a homestead where the suspects were allegedly hiding.

“On arrival at the house, two suspects were allegedly found smoking dagga outside the house. The suspects ran away and a chase ensued. Both were arrested not far from the house. A search inside the house was further conducted and six other suspects were found and arrested.

“Three pistols with their serial numbers filed off and 10 live rounds of ammunition were allegedly recovered,” Mbele said.

“All items that were allegedly stolen during the robbery were recovered. Two vehicles that are suspected to have been used during the robbery were impounded for further investigation.”

Mbele said the suspects, aged between 28 and 38, were arrested and taken to the Pongola police station for processing.

They are expected to appear at the Pongola Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition as well as possession of stolen property, possession of and dealing in dagga as well as robbery.
