DURBAN - One person was killed in the second four-vehicle crash in KwaZulu-Natal in two days.

KwaZulu Private Ambulance (KZPA) said they responded to the R56 between Richmond and Baynesfield in western KZN following reports of a collision on Tuesday afternoon.

KZPA said when emergency services arrived, they found that four vehicles: a minibus taxi, a light delivery vehicle and two cars, had been involved in a collision.

“Paramedics quickly assessed the scene and found that two patients had sustained critical injuries, two patients sustained serious injuries, and 13 patients sustained minor injuries,” KZPA said.

“Sadly though, one patient sustained fatal injuries and succumbed to their injuries before emergency services could arrive.”

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said an inquest was opened at Thornville SAPS.

“It is alleged by the complainant that on 16 November 2021 at 15:30 whilst travelling on the R56 towards Ixopo an animal ran across the road causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle and colliding with the vehicles on the oncoming carriage-way. A 41-year-old male victim was declared dead on the scene whilst the other victims were taken to hospital for medical attention,” Mbele said.

Meanwhile, preliminary reports into the N2 crash near uMtentweni on Sunday, where five people were killed and several injured, have revealed the driver of one of the vehicles was driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to the Department of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, preliminary reports have revealed that the driver of the VW Golf involved in the crash lost control of the vehicle while overtaking on the barrier line and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle along the N2.

“Further investigations have revealed that the driver of the VW Golf was driving under the influence of alcohol which instigated this accident,” the department said.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said it was alleged that on Sunday at around 4.30pm, four vehicles were involved in a crash along the N2 near uMtentweni Toll Plaza.

“Five people around 40 and 50-years-old died at the scene,” Mbele said.

“Seven injured persons were taken to a local hospital.”

Mbele said it was alleged one of the vehicles tried to overtake and collided with an oncoming vehicle, causing two other vehicles to collide and another to overturn.
