DURBAN - NATIONAL Freedom Party secretary-general Canaan Mdletshe has been attacked while monitoring special voting in Ulundi.
According to the party acting president Jeremiah Mavundla, the incident happened at an area called Nsukangihlale.
Mavundla told the Daily News that Mdletshe was at the police laying charges against his attackers. He said their secretary general's attack was was political because the attackers asked him why he was wearing an NFP T-shirt. Mdletshe’s attack followed that of teenager who was shot and wounded for allegedly wearing wearing an NFP mask and for refusing to recite slogans of another particular party.
According to a statement issued by Mdletshe on Friday, the boy was walking with his friend around Ulundi when they were allegedly approached by a group of people who were boarding a bakkie branded with a particular party’s stickers.
He said the driver of a bakkie was reported to have drawn a firearm and shot the boy.
Meanwhile, a memorial service of the late NFP Councillor candidate Dumisani Qwabe who was shot and burnt inside his vehicle on Tuesday, was held in Nongoma on Sunday.
Qwabe who was the ward 17 NFP candidate, was found by the police burnt beyond recognition in his car in Nkunzana village near Pongola.
NFP chairperson in Nongoma, who rushed to the scene after receiving the news found Qwabe’s body inside the burnt car.
Family members had identified him by his feet because the upper part was burnt beyond recognition.
