DURBAN – A private security company apprehended a suspect who had broken into a business premises in Newlands East, north of Durban, in the early hours of Monday morning.

In a Facebook post, KZN VIP said its control centre received information of a break-in, in progress at a major supermarket.

All available response officers were immediately dispatched to the scene, while the SAPS was notified.

“On arrival at the supermarket, KZN VIP officers noticed the removal of a window and burglar bars forced open. The officers reported hearing noises from inside the store,” KZN VIP said.

The company said the key holder of the store was contacted to allow access into the store while officers secured entry and exit points.

When they gained entry into the store, KZN VIP officers and other security companies, apprehended a suspect who was handed over to the police.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed the incident and said the complainant allegedly received a complaint from a security guard informing him about a burglary at his business premises on Loopwest Street in Newlands East and proceeded to the scene.

“On arrival, he opened the store and upon entry and inspection, he noticed an unknown man inside the storeroom with assorted groceries and other items in his possession,” Gwala said.

She said a 24-year-old suspect was arrested and charged for burglary at a business premises.

He is expected to appear in the Newlands East Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
