DURBAN – A lone gunman was shot and injured during a chase and shootout with a private security company in the Pietermaritzburg area on Tuesday.
Mi7 National Group spokesperson Colin Davids said Mi7 reaction officers recovered a stolen vehicle after a shootout with a suspect.
Davids said just before 5pm, a Mi7 surveillance dome equipped with Navic Automatic Number Plate Recognition software flagged a vehicle reported stolen.
Details of the vehicle, a white Ford Fiesta, were circulated and multiple Mi7 armed response units were dispatched.
“The vehicle was eventually spotted in the Lynnfield Park area by Mi7 reaction officers. The driver of the vehicle attempted to flee and a short vehicle chase ensued,” Davids said.
“The vehicle was brought to a halt, with the driver attempting to flee into bushes on the roadside. When Mi7 reaction officers chased after the suspect on foot, a shootout ensued.
“The suspect was wounded and apprehended,” continued Davids.
He said the suspect was shot in the leg.
He said Mi7 emergency medical services were dispatched to treat the suspect before he was placed under arrest.
Davids added that no Mi7 reaction officers were injured during the incident.
He said the matter was handed over to Camperdown SAPS to be investigated.
Police had not commented by the time of publication.
