DURBAN - UMNGENI Local Municipality manager Thembeka Cibane has been temporarily suspended, after a Special Investigating Unit report found she was allegedly implicated in corruption.

The Daily News has been reliably informed that the much-awaited SIU report will be presented at a full council meeting by mayor Sizwe Sokhela on Monday.

A source said three councillors and several managers are implicated in the report. The source said the report will reveal how millions of rand, earmarked for Covid-19 relief, were siphoned off by hand-picked companies – without following supply chain management policies.

Sokhela confirmed that the matter will be discussed, but could not divulge the contents of the report or whether the councillors’ names appear in it.

He confirmed that Cibane had been handed a suspension notice on Thursday. A council meeting, held on Wednesday last week, collapsed into disarray when councillors called for Cibane’s suspension.

Attempts to get comment from Cibane were unsuccessful.

The SIU report found that she had allegedly irregularly processed the utilisation of R19 950 000 for Covid-19 alleviation projects, and recommended disciplinary action and criminal charges against her.
