DURBAN - Five people were killed on the N2 in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday morning when multiple vehicles crashed.

Before 7am on Thursday morning, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) alerted to a multiple vehicle crash on the N2 before KwaMbonambi.

The KwaZulu Private Ambulance (KZPA) service responded to the incident on the N2 following reports of a collision.

KZPA said when emergency services arrived, they found that a vehicle had collided with a truck and another vehicle.

When paramedics assessed the scene they found that three patients had sustained critical injuries while one patient had sustained serious injuries.

The patients were treated on scene before they were transported to hospital for further treatment.

"Sadly, five patients had sustained fatal injuries and succumbed to their injuries before emergency services could arrive," KZPA said.

The RTMC said the road was closed in both directions.

Media reports suggest that four of the deceased were on their way to a wedding in Hlabisa.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said KwaMbonambi police were investigating a case of culpable homicide.

"It is alleged that yesterday morning at 5.30am, three vehicles were involved in a collision on the N2 freeway near Mphosa. A total of five people died at the scene while others were taken to hospital for medical attention," Gwala said.

The crash came hours after four people were killed and scores were left injured when a bus and truck collided before crashing into other vehicles in the Jacobs area, south of Durban, on Wednesday afternoon.

This also meant that more than 10 people were killed on KZN roads since Tuesday evening:

  • Five people were killed on the N2 near KwaMbonambi on Thursday morning.
  • One person was killed on the R102 in Park Rynie on Wednesday evening.
  • Four people were killed when a bus, truck and three vehicles collided in Jacobs on Wednesday afternoon.
  • A man was killed when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
  • A pedestrian was killed on Tuesday night after he was run over by a car at the entrance of Old Inanda Road in Verulam, north of Durban.
