DURBAN - KwaDukuza Local Municipality beaches have been reopened after they were closed last week ahead of the arrival of tropical cyclone Batsirai and the removal of shark nets along the coast by the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board.
Last week, the municipality said it decided to close all its beaches immediately until such a time that the cyclone passed and the shark safety gear was restored.
The municipality announced that it decided to reopen beaches from Monday, following the precautionary closure last Thursday.
Municipal spokesperson Sipho Mkhize said: “Whilst the beaches are now open, bathing/swimming is allowed at beaches where shark safety gear has been restored. The gear has been restored at Thompson’s Bay and Salt Rock beaches; this will progress to other beaches over this week owing to favourable weather conditions.”
The municipality said it appreciated the high level of cooperation in adhering to the municipality’s precautionary decision.
The eThekwini Municipality took a similar decision and closed its beaches due to the removal of shark nets.
