DURBAN - ETHEKWINI Municipality has finally intervened in the matter of the abandoned and dilapidated government flats in Lamontville.
This after numerous outcries by people who were to be placed in the flats, as well as calls by the DA.
The head of the City’s housing and infrastructure committee, deputy mayor Philani Godfrey Mavundla, visited the flats on Thursday last week and inspected them.
Mavundla told the Daily News he had received a report that said the flats were abandoned as a result of the rightful beneficiaries being prevented from moving into them by a mob of people. He vowed to sort out the problem and place the deserving people in the flats.
The DA has been consistently questioning the municipality about the flats, saying their abandonment since 2019 was a political ploy, because the area had been under one of its councillors since 2016.
Party councillor Sithembiso Ngema, who again raised the issue in a story published by the Daily News last week, said on Monday that while the party appreciated that the municipality was finally doing something about the flats, there were still questions to be answered.
Among them was how much of taxpayers’ money was being used to pay the security company guarding the flats.
Ngema added that the city must also inform the public about how much would be spent on renovations, as the flats were dilapidated and had been vandalised.
