DURBAN - An elderly man, 63, was arrested alongside a 44-year-old suspect for being in possession of three firearms and 102 rounds of ammunition in two separate arrests.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the suspects were arrested in the early hours of Thursday morning during an intelligence-driven operation by the King Cetshwayo District Task Team, Empangeni Crime intelligence and the District Task Team in Ntambanana.

“The police officers proceeded to the Mambuka area, where they arrested a 63-year-old man at his homestead for being in possession of an R1 rifle, a shotgun and 99 rounds of ammunition. He was charged for being in illegal possession of firearms and ammunition,” Mbele said.

She said while the police were on their way back to Ntambanana police station, they spotted a vehicle and requested to search it.

She said the two suspects were expected to appear in the Ngwelezane Magistrate’s Court for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and the possession of dangerous weapons.

Meanwhile, last week, police arrested two suspects aged 25 and 36 for a business robbery and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

The men were arrested in KwaMachi in the Ezinqoleni area after they were found in possession of firearms and ammunition. The police recovered three handguns and 261 rounds of ammunition which were allegedly stolen during a robbery that occurred on October 14, 2021, at a farm in Paddock on the south coast of Durban.
