DURBAN - A Tracker officer was shot twice during the recovery of a stolen vehicle in oThongathi, north of Durban, on Tuesday afternoon, but his bulletproof vest saved his life.

Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said a Tracker officer was shot twice on the R614 in upper oThongathi while in the process of recovering a bakkie that was stolen during a business robbery.

“At approximately 6.15pm, the tracking device on a white Toyota Hilux bakkie was activated after it was stolen during a business robbery in Stanger, KwaZulu-Natal. Members of Rusa, Tracker, SAPS and other security companies homed in on the signal,” Balram said.

“The bakkie turned on to the R614 and was heading in the direction of Tongaat when a Tracker operational member intercepted the robbers. Two suspects abandoned the vehicle and fired a volley of shots in his direction. Two 9mm rounds struck his bulletproof vest but did not penetrate his armour plating. The gunmen fled into a dense bush and are still at large.”

Balram said the Tracker officer sustained minor injuries.

Police had not commented by the time of publication.
