DURBAN - The eThekwini Municipality has said the railings that were stolen along the beachfront were being replaced.
Many beachgoers were greeted by closed gates and barriers at some piers after the railing were stolen.
Municipal spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said 40 railings were removed from New Pier at Wedge Beach and 10 railings were removed at North Beach Pier.
“Security was never removed from the beachfront. We have security personnel that patrol the beach daily. We also have security personnel stationed at the Point to uShaka Beach (Vusa-Isizwe Security Services),” Mayisela said.
“The matter was reported to beach management. The railings are being replaced.”
Durban resident Ashref Ismail posted on Facebook while he was at North Beach on Saturday, and said he was feeling sad.
“Ya neh, nothing is safe or sacred, right?! Theft of railings directly opposite the SAPS beachfront offices on the Golden Mile in Durban necessitated the closure of two piers,” read his post.
