Cape Town - Metrorail in the Western Cape has suspended the long-awaited reintroduction of train services between Eerste River and Bellville along the northern corridor.

The line has been non-operational since March 2020, and it was anticipated to be reopened on Monday after an announcement last week.

Many commuters had taken to social media to express their excitement and relief upon hearing the news.

Metrorail spokesperson, Zino Mihi, had said the commuter rail service would bring the service back following an outcry from people.

“(This) is a response to a number of requests from the communities and customers of the Eerste River area to reopen the line,” she said.

However, Mihi made another statement, claiming the service was again temporarily suspended due to “environmental issues” that were affecting the line’s operation.

She said an update would be communicated in due course.

Meanwhile, a shuttle service between Simon’s Town and Fish Hoek has been introduced.

The line was closed at the start of the year due to environmental issues and sand on the tracks.

The line is popular among local and international tourists who use it to get to the beach.

Acting regional manager, Raymond Maseko said: “As we are wrapping up the year, I would like to thank all our customers for their patience with us as the business as we try to recover the service on most of our lines in the region.”
