Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) has once again been named as Africa’s Leading Airport for 2020 by the World Travel Awards.
The airport has won the coveted title for the past four consecutive years. The World Travel Awards held its Africa Winners Day virtually on November 9.
“Cape Town International Airport is honoured to once again be awarded this respected industry award. There has never been a more crucial time for demonstrating excellence in travel as we look to rebuild our economy post the Covid-19 epidemic.
’’This is why receiving the award for Africa’s Leading Airport again this year is so important to us – we intend to use every opportunity to showcase that travel is safe,” said CTIA senior manager for corporate affairs Deidre Davids.
“We have over time seen a slow, but steady increase in passenger movement at the airport, with just over fifty arriving and departing flights a day.”
The World Travel Awards serves to recognise, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the global travel and tourism industry. Categories are nominated and voted for by travel and tourism professionals as well as consumers worldwide.
CTIA is managed by the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) and is the third largest airport in Africa. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic it facilitated nearly 11 million passengers per annum.
Meanwhile, Table Mountain has been announced Africa’s leading tourist attraction.
In addition to Table Mountain’s win this year, Cape Town also walked away with the recognition of being “Africa’s Leading Festival & Event Destination”.
“At this point in time, where tourism and travel have suffered greatly as a result of Covid-19, we are extremely pleased to bring this accolade home to South Africa, and Cape Town in particular,” said Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company managing director Wahida Parker.
