FRESH cupcakes, darling little koeksisters, dainty sandwiches and a pot or two of tea are the perfect remedy for a busy week at work. If you’re looking for a new place to enjoy tea with friends, then look no further than The Last Word in Constantia.

Nestled in a lush garden just behind Peddlars on the Bend, the five-star hotel is a hidden gem. The hotel has two sittings, from 11.30am to 1.30pm and from 2pm to 4pm – plenty of time to unwind and sample a pleasant range of dainties.

The day I visited was somewhat damp and miserable, but as I stepped into the lounge the sun fought back the clouds and came streaming into the conservatory area. The décor is bright and airy and cheerful spring patterns and homey fabric make it the kind of place where you could happily spend more than just two hours. There is a pleasant mix of modern and classic décor throughout the hotel. I sank back into a comfy sofa to peruse the tea menu.

Although my mother and I were the only two guests for the sitting, I was impressed to see they had not been sparing with the spread. In hushed tones we pondered just how long was polite enough to wait before descending on the table. About two and a half minutes. Everything was so beautifully presented it was almost a shame to tuck in.

We started with the savoury offerings. Fresh cucumber sandwiches without crusts, of course, tangy mini chicken pies, cheese scones, salmon parcels, shrimp crostini and the most delicious little camembert and cranberry phyllo pastry quiches. And as we nibbled, the platters were replenished. The worst part about being the only guests was that it was shamefully apparent how many of the quiches we devoured.

Sated on the salty, we moved on to the sweet. Syrupy mini koeksisters, scones with preserves and cream, spongy cupcakes with coffee-flavoured icing and slices of cheese cake went down a treat.

As summer slowly returns, the already picturesque garden promises to become even more charming. The lounge opens right on to a sunny courtyard with a sparkling blue pool.

Although you’re not greeted by an overwhelming feast of food putting strain on the table, The Last Word offers more than enough to tickle your tastebuds and leave you happily replete, pencilling another visit into your diary.

No matter the number of guests, the hotel lays on a spread, but it is best to call ahead and book.
