MY GRANDMOTHER SENDS HER REGARDS AND APOLOGISES

Fredrik Backman, R311

Sceptre

Never before has a story left me laughing and sobbing simultaneously quite like this one. Translated from the original Swedish, this is the exquisitely told tale of Elsa and her granny.

Like all seven, almost eight-year-olds, Elsa lives in a world of superheroes and fairytales.

Her granny is her best and only friend and the main instigator in most of the trouble Elsa gets into. But not all stories have happy endings, and Elsa finds herself facing some dragons that are much bigger than any she’s had to deal with in their secret fantasy world.

Backman’s prose is delightful, his characters amusing and multilayered, and the story utterly enchanting.

It’s a heart-wrenching novel filled with genuine laugh-out-loud moments.
