PETROL heads from around the city are set to descend on Canal Walk for a motor show of luxurious proportions this weekend.

The show, which opened yesterday, will run from 9am till 9pm daily until Monday at Canal Walk’s centre court.

Rare cars on display include a Porsche 1975 RSR, one of the most iconic Porsche Martini racing cars of all time, the Elf S 06, which has contested the Western Province sports car championship and won the Coastal Endurance championship Series in 2007, the 2006 Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder E-gear Convertible, 2011 BMW 1 series M Coupe, 2006 Bentley Continental GT Coupé with Mulliner styling pack, and the custom hand-built Honda Prelude.

Event organiser Juanita Vorster described the vehicles as “show-stoppers”, adding: “There will also be cars which are the latest on the market.”

The centre will also host the Jaguar F-type R Coupé – which set a land speed record of 294.68km/h and is now the fastest production vehicle in South Africa, Jaguar’s Drew Valentine said.

“It is classified as the fastest official governed production vehicle from zero to 300km/h,” he added.

The Jaguar F-type R Coupé was driven into the record books in February this year at the Upington Airport.

“The coupé is (electronically) limited to 300km/h, but we chose not to remove the speed limiter, even though the regulations make provision for us to legally do so.

“The car that we used is exactly as customers can buy off the showroom floor,” said Jaguar Land Rover South Africa and sub-Sahara Africa managing director Richard Gouverneur.

“Not only do we say that racing is in our blood – we go out there and prove it,” Gouverneur added.

“Aside from being inspired by our history of racing and land speed records, we also wanted to show off the innovation, performance and safety of our vehicles.”
