Sunflowers up by most in seven months

Johannesburg - Sunflower seed futures in South Africa for September delivery climbed the most in more than seven months in Johannesburg.

Corn also increased.

Sunflower seeds for delivery this month advanced 2.4 percent to 4,183 rand a metric ton, the most for the contract since January 15, by the noon close on the South African Futures Exchange.

White maize for December delivery gained 0.9 percent to 1,721 rand a ton, the highest since September 2, while the yellow variety rose 0.3 percent to 1,769.80 rand a ton.

South Africa is the continent’s largest producer of maize.

The white grain is used to make a staple food food known locally as pap, while yellow maize is mainly fed to animals.

Wheat for delivery in December was unchanged at 3,645 rand a ton. - Bloomberg News
